Uznanie Johna Williamsa za kompozytora, par excellence, największych hitów filmowych Hollywood, nieco przyćmiewa aspekt kariery Williamsa jako dyrygenta koncertowego. Stając na czele Boston Pops Orchestra, Williams wprowadził muzykę filmową na sale koncertowe, co znacznie podniosło jej wartość artystyczną i przyniosło wielkie uznanie środowiska klasycznego dla muzyki filmowej.
